Rumors flying this week about Dougie Howlett and his return to New Zealand at the end of this season. Although nothing has been confirmed yet, Munster will be very sorry to see him go. I’m sure every Munster fan will be wishing him the best of luck in his quest to get back into the All Blacks world cup squad.

Dougie has been the consummate professional during his time at Munster, The experience that he brought to the squad is priceless. There was never any doubt of his dedication to the Munster cause, there was one moment this season that summed Dougie’s commitment up perfectly for me.

It was in the Heineken Cup group game against Treviso in Thomond Park, October ’09.  Munster were 0-10 down to the Italians, our scrum was getting hammered, Dougie has quite obviously pulled his hamstring and is limping badly, the ball was kicked through on Howlett’s wing, Dougie hops and skips on one leg in retreat and manages to ground the ball for a 22 before a Treviso player could get to it. The pain Dougie was in was there for everyone to see, but he put himself on the line once again for Munster, saving a certain try.

Dougie has been a great fit in the Munster setup, his achievements on the pitch and plenty of  colorful ‘off the pitch’ stories, will mean he will hold his place in Munster folklore!

Finally, this is the moment that I will remember forever, the night in Thomond park that our Kiwi boys stepped up and performed the haka against the All-Blacks, still raises hairs on my neck to this day. Thanks for the memories Dougie and good luck!
